TT.VII Technical Multi-Track with Parallel SYMPOSIA
Life in Space
Co-organized with Thales Alenia Space
Chair: Marziale FEUDALE & Mirko ROCCI, Thales Alenia Space
The 'Life in Space' session at NanoInnovation 2024, organized in collaboration with Thales Alenia Space Italia, will describe the key vital challenges, opportunities and front-line advancements in assuring human survivability and well-being in space environments. As humanity consolidates its positioning in the low Earth orbit, and ventures into long-term missions on the moon and Mars, the demand for human habitation in space continues to grow in complexity, and commercial opportunities open up for taking advantage of the uniqueness of space flight. In this context, this session combines presentations by experts from Thales Alenia Space with the most relevant contributions of academic researchers in this fast-moving field. The session will present advancements on systems, technologies and materials for space exploration habitation, advanced life support, such as water regeneration and food production, space environment protection, including radiation shielding, modular habitat designs of extraterrestrial environments, and applications of biotechnologies in space for human health. Further on, the discussion is going to trace the development and integration of enabling technologies (e.g. Additive Manufacturing) novel materials and nanotechnologies, designed towards ensuring space mission safety and efficiency. A special emphasis will be placed on how these innovations are positioned to be included in the next explorative missions and space stations. The goal of this session is to promote a multidisciplinary debate, the encouragement of collaboration between industry, academia, and research institutions, and, through cooperation, the solutions to improve life in space and on earth. Participants will have an opportunity to discuss with key stakeholders and learn how technologies developed for space exploration make dramatic differences for our everyday life.
